The Safe Space: Zero by choice - a call to make safer decisions
Menar Group Health and Safety Manager Ricardo van Rooi
We concluded the previous year on a positive note, achieving an 11-year fatality-free record and reaching Kangra’s Lost Time Injury Free (LTIFR) target. The message from last year’s critical season campaign still resonates. The theme ‘Zero by Choice’ has had a significant impact, reminding us to make everyday decisions that create a safe and healthy working environment.
We still see its positive impact today, encouraging us to continue making safer decisions. We can never say we have arrived in terms of safety. It is a choice we need to make daily because our families are waiting for us to arrive home safely.
During the campaign, we all rallied together behind a worthy cause. One that speaks to safeguarding life itself and promotes Zero Harm in our operations. Our COO, John Scobbie, conveyed to employees that safety is everyone’s responsibility while encouraging employees to stop and ask for assistance when in doubt.
This year, we aim to strengthen our Women in Mining structures, procure appropriate PPE for our female colleagues, introduce lactating facilities at all our sites, and proactively promote a safe and healthy workplace through regular multi-drug testing initiatives, among other key efforts. We are motivated to approach 2025 with renewed focus to champion health and safety in the workplace.
