Matsie aims for career in safety

Office administrator, Matsie Ramathoka

Office Administrator Matsie Ramathoka was initially drawn to mining by the prospect of becoming an engineer, but her career path took a different turn. Matsie obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Administration from the University of Limpopo after matriculating from Hoerskool Merensky in 2010.

After graduating, she joined the National Department of Basic Education as an intern in the school safety department, where she worked for three years. Matsie

that maintained the department’s building. “We were a team of six, facilitating more than 800 people, and I was the facility coordinator,” Matsie says. She worked there for two years before getting retrenched.

A few months later, she secured a job at a coal trading company as an administration manager. She believes the stint in coal trading prepared her to work in mining. “The coal trading experience gave me perspective on how mining works. I got to know a lot of things like qualities and kinds of products to expect in mining,” she says. In October 2022, she joined Kangra.

Her responsibilities at the mine include managing the diaries for the management team, planning meetings and welcoming guests, among other things. Matsie is also a member of Kangra’s Women in Mining committee. She is proud of her career direction and hopes to explore other opportunities, especially in safety. “For me, safety addresses everything that is happening around the mine because before we produce anything, we need to mine safely,” Matsie concludes.
