Ambulance amplifies emergency response
Mpumalanga health MEC Sasekani Manzini and Kangra GM Paul Redelinghuys unveil the ambulance during a handover ceremony at the Driefontein Community Health Centre
To support life-saving efforts, Kangra handed over an ambulance to the Mpumalanga Department of Health. The mine invested R1.2 million to purchase and customise the Volkswagen Crafter in line with the department’s specifications. The purchase and fitting of the vehicle were part of Kangra’s commitment to implement its Social and Labour Plan. The ambulance was unveiled during a handover ceremony at the Driefontein Community Health Centre in January 2025.
Mpumalanga Health MEC Sasekani Manzini hailed the collaboration between the government and Kangra. “The donated ambulance will contribute immensely to the community of Mkhondo, especially in Driefontein, in that it will reduce the delays in responding to the sick and injured,” said Manzini. Driefontein is over 50 kilometres from Piet Retief Hospital. Driefontein forum chairperson Themba Nkosi said the ambulance was an impactful social project that would uplift the community.
Mkhondo Municipality Executive Mayor Ngelosi Ndhlovu was excited about the benefits that would accrue to residents. “The ambulance can penetrate remote or underserved areas, guaranteeing more community members receive emergency medical treatment.” Ward
Councillor Nosipho Sangweni said a quicker delivery of medical care will give people a better chance at recovery and survival. The need for an additional ambulance was identified through extensive consultations with representatives from the various communities and the Mkhondo Local Municipality. “The company views its role in supporting the community as a holistic commitment to fostering sustainable development and improving the quality of life for residents beyond its mining operations,” said Kangra General Manager Paul Redelinghuys.
