Above and beyond the call of duty
Surface foreman, Sampie Dreyer
“Everything that the sun shines on, that’s what I’m responsible for.” This is how Kangra’s Surface Foreman, Sampie Dreyer, light-heartedly describes his duties at the mine. Sampie is responsible for the maintenance of electrical and plumbing systems above ground. This includes the surface areas at the Uthingo and Udumo Shafts, as well as the East and West sides of the mine. It’s a big responsibility, but Sampie reckons he probably has one of the best teams for the job. “I’ve got a brilliant team,” he says.
The surface team includes two electricians, two fitters and a plumber. They ensure that power stays on, the water pipelines are intact, and the seamless movement of coal from the underground shafts to the processing plant. This involves regular maintenance and coordination with other teams. Currently, they are also working on the construction of the gym and Kangra’s community water project.
Sampie joined Kangra in 2008 after completing Grade 12 in Secunda. “I was fortunate enough to secure a position as a millwright apprentice at Kangra. During my journey, the engineering department at the time did not need a millwright, so I had to decide which direction to take,” he says.
Sampie decided to do an apprenticeship in electrical engineering, which he completed in 2010. He then worked as a surface electrician and was later promoted to surface foreman. “I’m currently training to become a senior foreman,” he says. After completing the General Engineering Supervisor programme, Sampie hopes to pursue a degree in engineering.
