Digital system supports safety efforts

Using a digital tool to document and track health and safety records helps Kangra’s team to stay on top of things. The mine implemented Mango, a digital Quality, Health, Safety, and Environmental management system, over four years ago. Since then, Safety Officers Thuli Mokwena and Thabani Buthelezi say routine inspections, reporting, and follow-ups have become more efficient.

Thuli, a safety officer responsible for surface areas around the mine, says people are more likely to comply with health and safety rules with the system in place. It documents potential hazards that need immediate intervention, sends out constant alerts and reminders for upcoming tasks, while helping the team to track progress.

“As a safety officer if I find an area with deviations, I make sure that we stop and fix it immediately, because I cannot allow substandard conditions, which are not safe,” says Thuli.

Previously, capturing data during inspections was manual, and making follow-ups after about 25 monthly inspections was time-consuming and ineffective. Now the team can easily compile weekly reports and identify points of intervention. Thabani, the safety officer responsible for underground areas, says the system assists with compliance. “It impacts the safety outcomes because once we identify the issue that requires attention, everyone involved is reminded of their commitment to resolve it urgently,” he says.
