Local farmers cultivate seeds of success

KANGRA AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS HOSTED A GRAIN FARMERS DAY EVENT FOR LOCAL FARMERS IN DONKERHOEK, MPUMALANGA.

This year’s grain harvest season marked a significant milestone for local farmers in Donkerhoek, who are beneficiaries of Kangra’s agricultural initiative. A portion of the 600-hectare project successfully yielded maize crops, spurring hope for the project’s future growth. Local farmers received infrastructure, farming equipment, including a new tractor, among other implements. The mine collaborated with the Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture to drive the initiative, assisting local farmers to transition from subsistence to commercial operations that could supply local shops, schools, and health facilities with fresh produce.

Chairman of the local farmers’ committee, Jabulani Nhleko, said they previously cultivated between 3 and 5 hectares of land. But with the support of Kangra and the Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, they hope to reach 600 hectares. Work has already started on the first 35 hectares to prepare the land for cultivation. “We are determined to work hard and become commercial farmers, producing large tonnages so we can end hunger,” remarked Nhleko. Kangra Stakeholder Relations Manager Mpfuneni Mulaudzi says such initiatives signify the mine’s commitment to support sustainable development within its host communities. “We believe that this initiative has the potential to assist with food security and support economic development in the area. We look forward to seeing the impact it will make in people’s lives,” Mulaudzi remarks.
