Kangra learnership raises mduduzi’s prospects

Mduduzi Shoba from Emahashini, a village near one of the mine’s shafts, has achieved his long-awaited dream of becoming a fully qualified miner. “This is a breakthrough, not only for my family but for my community,” says Mduduzi.  He joined Kangra through the mine’s learnership programme in 2023 while still pursuing training to for a blasting and continuous miner certificates, to qualify as a miner.

In February 2025, he was appointed as a miner at Kangra, three months after receiving his qualifications. Mduduzi, whose village is near the mine’s Unthingo Shaft, believes this is the beginning of greater things to come.  Prior to him getting employed at Kangra, there was no one working in his household. “This opportunity has really changed my life and my family's life,” he says. Mduduzi is stationed at Uthingo working with a team of about 14 people. His responsibilities include ensuring that all safety protocols and inspections are observed. He plans to pursue his Mine Overseers ticket within the next 18 months.
