Job Post: Inbye Underground Mine Overseer

Situated in the Panbult area, approximately 65 km from Piet Retief and 90 km from Ermelo, Kangra Coal (Pty) Ltd is a modern mechanised underground coal mining operation. Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Inbye Underground Mine Overseer.

Reporting Structure:

The successful candidate will be appointed in terms of Regulation 2.14.1 of the Mine Health and Safety Act and will report statutorily to the Mine Manager and functionally to the Production Manager.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 Certificate

  • Mine Overseer’s Certificate of Competency

  • Fiery Mine Blasting Certificate

  • Gas Testing Certificate

  • Valid Driver's Licence (Code 8 or higher) with own reliable transport

  • National Diploma, BTech or Degree in Mining Engineering will be advantageous

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years' underground coal mining experience in a mechanised mining environment

  • Minimum 2 years' experience as a Mine Overseer appointed in terms of Regulation 2.14.1 of the Mine Health and Safety Act

  • Experience in Continuous Miner sections, stonework, geological disturbances (dykes and faults), low-seam mining and conventional drill-and-blast operations

  • Experience in managing contractor performance and compliance.

Skills and abilities: 

  • Sound knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations

  • Strong leadership and people management skills

  • Risk assessment and risk management capabilities

  • Planning, organising and problem-solving skills

  • Incident investigation and root cause analysis experience

  • Financial and cost management understanding

  • Effective communication, presentation and facilitation skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Ability to lead teams in achieving production, safety and compliance objectives

  • Demonstrated commitment to a Zero Harm culture and visible felt leadership.

  • Basic understanding of labour relations principles and disciplinary processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with all statutory, safety, health and environmental requirements within the area of responsibility

  • Provide visible leadership to promote and maintain a strong safety culture

  • Manage the health and safety performance of all employees and contractors under your control

  • Plan and coordinate short-, medium- and long-term mining activities to achieve operational objectives

  • Ensure production, quality, safety and cost targets are achieved

  • Manage personnel, attendance, leave, training and performance within the area of responsibility

  • Monitor and control operational costs in line with approved budgets

  • Ensure the safe and efficient operation, installation, relocation and removal of underground equipment and infrastructure

  • Oversee ventilation standards and ensure safe working conditions throughout the operation

  • Ensure compliance with all requirements relating to the storage, issuing, use and control of explosives

  • Review production, equipment availability and labour performance reports and implement corrective actions where required

  • Lead investigations into incidents, hazards and operational deviations and ensure effective close-out of actions
