Workplace support gives Manesi hope
Payroll administrator, Manesi Sibeko
Faced with a debilitating illness that left her paralysed for months, Manesi Sibeko thought she would never be able to pursue her career goals. Manesi, a payroll administrator at Kangra, believes that the support she received from her colleagues played a role in her recovery. Today, back on her feet, Manesi looks forward to obtaining a qualification in tax and finance. “I’m determined to grow in the company and take on more responsibilities. They did not give up on me when I thought I would never be able to work again,” she says.
Her ordeal started in 2024 when she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, a condition that primarily affects the joints, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness. It affected her ability to walk and use her hands. “It all happened so fast,” Manesi recalls. After taking medication and attending physiotherapy sessions, she gradually started to recover while using a wheelchair to get around. Manesi also attended regular checkups with the mine’s doctor. She grew more eager to return to work as her condition improved.
“My manager advised that coming to the office on certain days would help my recovery because it would allow me to interact with people and reduce stress,” she says. Provision was made to ensure that her work area had a wheelchair ramp and a customised restroom. Today, Manesi no longer needs a wheelchair. “Being back at work gave me hope. I want to thank my managers, Schalk Beetge, Paul Redelinghuys, and HR Manager Buhle Nzuza for having faith in me,” she says.
Born and raised in Driefontein, Manesi joined Kangra in 2006 as a general worker. She then worked as a clerk and, ultimately, a payroll administrator in the HR department. Manesi holds a National Diploma in Payroll Administration, which she obtained through a Kangra bursary.
