From the GM
Kangra GM Paul Redelinghuys
Our operations continue to run strong, thanks to the contribution of our teams. This year, we embarked on another expansion project to develop a new section at the Udumo Shaft. This signifies Kangra’s pursuit of growth, which we hope creates more jobs while adding to Kangra’s journey to become one of the lowest-cost-per-tonne mines in South Africa.
I am pleased to see that the team has embraced overall efficiency by implementing digital programmes to improve the flow of everyday operations. Kangra’s continuing investment is beneficial to the local suppliers for the prospects of employment. The progress made by some of our long-standing local suppliers, like MumNkosi Cleaning and Projects, a company that grew from employing five to now 64 people, highlights the value we add to local economic development.
Health and Safety is at the top of our agenda, as we continue supporting Zero Harm in the workplace. We run ongoing campaigns to ensure employees stay healthy and safe. Our stakeholder relations team has successfully rolled out the second phase of Kangra’s water project. About 90 additional households now have access to clean tap water in this phase, bringing the total number of families benefitting from the project to about 120.
We also provided 100 pairs of shoes to schools in surrounding communities and procured a tractor for a community farming project. On community infrastructure development, we refurbished the 18-kilometre Mlotshwa Road. To support the community, we collaborated with the Mpumalanga Department of Health and procured a fully-fitted ambulance. These initiatives are among many of our efforts to improve the lives of the residents of Mkhondo where we operate. We constantly ask ourselves pertinent questions about Kangra’s overall impact on society. We are driven to do better, add value, and be a force of positive impact.
