Mining with Purpose: Restoring Land, Developing People and Supporting Sustainable Communities

At Kangra, our responsibility extends beyond the coal we produce. We operate with a clear understanding that sustainable mining must create value for our employees, our host communities, and the environment we all depend on.

Over the past year, we have continued to strengthen our focus on environmental compliance, rehabilitation, safety, skills development, and community upliftment. These areas remain central to how we measure progress and how we build a mining operation that leaves a positive legacy.

A major priority has been the advancement of our environmental rehabilitation programme. The progress made at Block C, including the seeding phase, marks an important step in restoring previously mined land and supporting long-term ecological recovery. Looking ahead, the rehabilitation of H Block and the planned closure and rehabilitation of Adit 2 will remain key focus areas. These projects reflect our commitment to responsible closure planning, land restoration, and environmental stewardship.

We have also taken practical steps to manage our environmental footprint, including the re-levelling of the discard dump area to prevent decanting beyond designated areas. Rehabilitation is not simply a compliance requirement; it is part of our duty to protect the land for future generations.

Our commitment to people remains equally important. Through learnerships, cadet programmes, artisan development, agricultural training, and plumbing skills initiatives, Kangra continues to support local youth and community members in building meaningful careers. The stories in this publication show how access to opportunity can change lives, families, and communities.

Community development also remains a key part of our social responsibility. The support provided to Qedela Secondary School, the Donkerhoek agricultural initiative, and the water access project are examples of practical interventions aimed at improving education, food security, local economic participation, and quality of life.

Internally, the opening of the Kangra gym reflects our belief that employee wellness must form part of a healthy and productive workplace. We also continue to invest in safety training, including focused methane management awareness, because the safety of our people will always be our highest priority.
